BMMI Episode 025: Bird’s Eye View

birdseyeview_poster

Road trips are about finding yourself. Communing with nature lets you realize your full potential as a human on this green Earth. Or these may all be ploys of a trickster demon to hitchhike your possessed body to a certain destination, say a place of brimstone and hellfire. The first half of Bird’s Eye View is a legitimately uplifting, inspirational road trip movie about a woman finding herself after her husband just ups and disappears. The second half is the slow creep of realization behind why her husband is missing, and why it’s too late for her to find him. And it starts with a human face, and an owl’s body. If you like Into the Wild and Drag Me to Hell, this will do ya.

The Road to Baenum

map_rinsland_croproute

This is the route the party takes in On the Road: Fidgety Digits, the fifth episode of our podcast Podquest: No Strangers to Adventure. This post may spoil some things if you haven’t already listened to the first five episodes!

The dotted line follows the main road most traffic takes upon arrival to Rinsland. From Zlys Port, the only safe place to dock on the entire island, the main road takes the smoothest approach over rolling fields to later mountainous terrain to the capital Feudersfall, tucked in near the steep cliffs northwest five to six days travel away.

The party’s carriage ride takes them about a day’s travel from the port to Baenum, the second largest town in the country. Baenum is a town of craftsmen, merchants, and an enchanter that naturally developed as the first major waypoint on a long trip to Feudersfall.

This is a close-up of the general map of Rinsland, that will continue to be detailed with landmarks and populations as the story evolves. Detailed maps of towns will follow as the party explores all the nooks and crannies.

Ivaniri’s Stone

ivaniri's stone

This is an item introduced in Part One of the prologue of our podcast Podquest: No Strangers to Adventure. This post may spoil minor things if you haven’t already listened to the first episode!

Ivaniri, an ancient elf, has just arrived in Zlys Port with his grandson Johnny. He has this carved stone with him. The blue gemstone is indigenous to Rinsland only. The pattern carved into it is a familiar elven design. There’s nothing particularly unique about this carved pendant; it’s basically like a high-end souvenir to Ivaniri, to remind him of Rinsland, to return to the home he left centuries ago. Ivaniri even offered the stone to the party in exchange for help moving forward on his journey. Why the stone would be fought over is unknown…

The notes on the diagram are written in the Otikiri Elven, an isolated off-shoot of Elven unique to the native Otikiri Elves of Rinsland.

Gnoman, Digby, and Giacabo were quick to help this new acquaintance retrieve his pendant, for which Ivaniri is supremely grateful.

A Map of Rinsland

map_rinsland_crop2

Welcome to Rinsland! In the Prologue episodes of Podquest: No Strangers to Adventure, Digby, Giacabo, and Gnoman have just arrived in Zlys Port of the country of Rinsland in the far South of a fantasy globe.

Digby rode in a barrel over the open ocean in pursuit of the arsonist that burned down his bar.

Giacabo built his own little boat to sail here when he heard tell rumors of an old tome that held the secrets to curing his tribe’s blood curse.

And brave Gnoman boarded the ferry from the Big City to this distant corner of the world in search of a missing person to solve a case.

All three arrive with just the name of their destination: the blossoming city of Feudersfall.

This is a general topographical map of the country. As a living document, names, locations, and landmarks will be added as the characters stomp all over this land.

Facts about Rinsland:

-It’s roughly the size of Iceland.

-Once a year it has a full day of sunlight, and a full day of night.

-A castle is nestled in the mile-high cliffs up north, next to a giant waterfall!

-The southern half is usually snowy and cold, but not so much the northern half.

-And, as part of the overall setting, magic is an uncommon trait, which has made the newly arrived characters stand out a bit already.

Podquest: No Strangers to Adventure – A Close-up

playercharacters

It’s finally here! A Podquest post! Let’s kick off with a close-up look at the three characters that will be dealing the damage, solving the mysteries, committing the crimes. The accompanying image is from the thumbnail artwork for the podcast: Kelsey’s interpretation of the three trudging through a magic/windstorm, in clothes probably a bit nicer than the characters usually wear.

On the left: Gnoman Gumshoe, a gnome private detective, played by Andrew. He’s a Ranger with a pistol and a large magnifying glass that not only aids in investigation checks, but can be wielded as a blunt weapon. His trench coat is so noir, but oversized, like Dad’s noir coat. And his shoes are made of gum (I’m still not sure if that’s canon or not.)

The tall, brooding wolfman in the center is Giacabo Pale Eye, a Druid Shifter, played by Nathan. Giacabo is half human, half wolf, half adventurer from an outcast tribe of Shifters afflicted by a mysterious blood curse, who’s also a doctor. An emerald-befitted mummified crow’s head serves as his source of magic, and a cane sword serves as his weapon.

On the right: Digby Sudsworth (Esq.), a dwarf Bard-tender, played by Dylan. Digby is a phenomenal listener and weaver of tales, which just so happen to be perfect tenets of a great barkeep and bard. On his back is a hefty keg of beer; while full it is a disadvantage to his dexterity, but swings like a mighty warhammer when attached to a handle.

Podquest: No Strangers to Adventure already has several episodes available for the listening! There is also a short introduction that captures the feel of what the show overall has shaped up to be. If you’re unfamiliar, the podcast is a live recording of the four of us playing our first campaign of Dungeons and Dragons ever. So far, playing 5th Edition has been incredibly fun and rewarding for us. Already, we’ve learned so much and have found a play style that’s relaxed and goof-friendly. The episodes follow an overarching cooperative narrative in an improvisational structure. We build a fantasy world together one joke at a time.

The decision to make this a podcast came easy; Andrew and Kelsey enjoy podcasting Big Money Movie Ideas already, and recording our D&D sessions together with friends is a way to share and document this cooperative storytelling experience. If you’ve never played Dungeons & Dragons, it is amazingly rewarding creatively and socially. With a rule-guided framework, the cohesive story we’ve been able to spontaneously create together has been surprising, and surprisingly fun. As our story continues, we look forward to future guest episodes, more original music and artwork, and being able to share in all of this with you.

BMMI Episode 024: Fists of Felt

fistsoffelt_posterWhat is man? What is Fuppet™? These are the hard hitting questions we address in this week’s episode of Big Money Movie Ideas. McDermott the Toad, a Fuppet™ that is charged with identifying between man and Fuppet™ finds out the much darker secrets behind his very existence. Is that a finger in your stuffing or is there stuffing in your finger? This poster is a cross between Eastern Promises and Bloodsport draped in felt and drenched in blood.

BMMI Guest Ep 01: Daves of Our Lives (with Special Guest Joe!)

I think this poster speaks for itself.

Early Edition meets Groundhog Day in something that resembles Multiplicity because there’s a bunch of Michael Keatons. In the episode, Kelsey mentions the Omphalos Hypothesis by the name of pro-chronos: it’s an unprovable pseudoscientific mess of an idea that says we have no way of knowing if the universe actually started five seconds ago, started by some guy that really wanted an answer to “Which came first: the chicken or the egg?”

Oh yeah, and we had a guest star! Joe!

BMMI Episode 023: Scooby Doo Who Are You?

Zoinks! Jinkies! Ruh Roh! What else you got. It’s a Scooby Doo movie. A hard R rating for revenge, skin peeling, slow motion bullets flying through skulls, and one guilty pup that would just as soon nibble a crime scene corpse as chow down a giant comical sandwich. He’s a dog, Fred. He can’t help it sometimes. This movie is about defining yourself for yourself, when the world denies you dignity, agency, and identity. This is the new Scooby Doo movie. Ruh roh, indeed, my friend.
